In the everyday life of the Salvador court mental hospital in northeast Brazil, stories abound about people consigned to oblivion. Convicts without any psychological assistance, many overstaying their sentences as they have nowhere to go. These inmates are virtually condemned to a life sentence and to a contrived form of social death as a result of their depersonalization and abandonment.
