According to UN data, chronic hunger today affects some 920 million people around the world, 11 million of whom live in Brazil. In spite of the Brazilian government's food assistance programs, several families across the country face the daily nightmare of shortage of proteins, which makes them resort to "garapa" - a prosaic mix of lukewarm water and sugar - to cheat the stomach, especially the children's. Such is the case of Robertina, mother of 11, and Rosa, mother of 3, who live in Choró, in the hinterland of Ceará State, a degraded environment of unemployment and ignorance devoid of sanitation, running water, education and hope. Not too far from there, in the outskirts of the state capital, Fortaleza, the plight of Dona Lucia and her three daughters, is not any different. One of them has severe malnutrition and her alcoholic husband suffers from mental problems.
