Shot over a period of 11 years between Brazil and West Africa - Senegal, Mali and Ivory Coast -, this film by Brazilian sociologist and filmmaker Raquer Gerber provides an overview of Brazilian black movements as of the 1970's. The film ingeniously recounts the story of Beatriz Nascimento, a black activist and historian, who seeks her identity through researching the history of "quilombos" (settlements for runaway slaves during the colonial times in Brazil). By identifying these places as warrior settlements of cultural resistance from 15th century Africa through 20th century Brazil, the director allows us to follow the transformations undergone by Negro cultures that were brought into the country by force and endured more than two centuries of slavery. An abolition treaty was signed in late 19th century without proper backing for the new black citizens.
