The Portuguese filmmaker Silvino Santos (1886-1970) first came to Brazil when he was 13. He crossed the Atlantic Ocean in search of the Amazon River, which had become a fantastic myth in his own mind. By filming in the Amazon in early 20th century, at the pinnacle of the rubber cycle, his documentaries not only served as a witness to the contradictions of the Amazonian economic development, but were also the forerunners of the Brazilian ethnographic documentary film-making. Throughout his 84 years of life, Santos made 9 feature films and 57 shorts in Brazil and Portugal, which chronicled the work of rubber tappers, fishermen and the everyday life of several indigenous populations.
