This film is a forerunner of the Cinema Novo Movement and portrays the everyday reality of fishermen in Arraial do Cabo, a village in Rio de Janeiro State coast, Their primitive way of life and laboring work are threatened by the construction of a plant, which gives rise to a real estate and economic boom in the area. The factory causes air pollution killing off fishing stocks, while also threatening the livelihoods of the fishermen. Tradition and modernity, history and progress are opposed in this well-balanced and very human portrayal featuring breathtaking cinematography by Mario Carneiro, who co-directed the film with Paulo César Saraceni.
