RioFilme is honored to support yet another edition of
It’s All True, which since 1996 presents Brazilian audiences
with the best of domestic and international documentary
production. It is the main event dedicated
to documentary films in South America. This year, in
addition to the films in competition, there is also a retrospective
of works by the acclaimed Israeli documentary
filmmaker Avi Mograbi, who will be attending the
Festival as a special guest.
Founded in 1992, RioFilme is a public owned company
attached to the Rio de Janeiro City Government aimed
at investments in cinema and audiovisual production.
Over its 16 years of activities, it has acted as a catalyst
to the so-called recapture of Brazilian cinema. It distributed,
co-distributed and co-produced approximately
200 feature length films and 100 shorts, most of them
shot on location in Rio de Janeiro. It also spearheaded
several initiatives for the promotion and dissemination
of Brazilian cinema.
RioFilme’s film portfolio gathers together documentaries
of great relevance for Brazilian cinematography. In 2009,
the company plans to update its mission and move towards
a results focused management, thanks to the vision
of the new city government who understand the
strategic importance of the audiovisual industry for the
development of Rio de Janeiro. This will not only give a
new boost to the Brazilian movie industry, but also help
shape the vocation of the city for film production.
The support of the Rio de Janeiro City Government to It’s
All True Festival through RioFilme is one of the first initiatives
towards the implementation of policies that underscore
the city as a major audiovisual production hub in
Brazil. RioFilme will be responsible for the industry’s production
chain, whereby supporting cinema related events
is as important as encouraging film production. Therefore,
festivals and exhibitions will be vitally important spaces
for film dissemination, reception and reflection.
Following a brief restructuring phase, RioFilme is preparing
its 2009-2010 investment plan. The first film of this
new phase is the feature length fiction “Divã” by José Alvarenga
Jr., a 100% Rio de Janeiro production in partnership
with Total, Globo Filmes and Lereby. The film is slated for
release on April 17 and is set to become a box office hit
this year. On March 27, RioFilme launches the documentary
“Anabazys” by Paloma Rocha and Joel Pizzini.
In addition to its film portfolio, which features productions
shot in town and/or made by Rio de Janeiro
producers, RioFilme plans to undertake dissemination
and promotion initiatives that enhance the access and
formation of audiences to films, while also providing
support to small companies. Our goal is to expand the
cultural, social and economic impact of the local Rio de
Janeiro audiovisual production. Through this, RioFilme
hopes to be contributing to the growth and development
of the cinema industry in Brazil.
