| If in the past, documentary film was a genre that
hardly found acceptance among cinema goers and
was little appreciated for its realistic content – usually
fact heavy films focused on burning issues – and
also for its often precarious technical conditions, today
this picture has radically changed, especially in
the last decade. Documentaries have found a firm
place in the world’s motion picture scene, thanks to
the significant improvement in their technical quality,
which is increasingly state-of-the-art, the vitality
of their content and relevance of their themes.
The flourishing of this genre also established for itself
a specific documentary language, which has become
more elaborate and has branched out into numerous
ramifications, thus expanding its creative potential.
This process has yielded increasingly engaging and
			thought-provoking works, ranging from traditional
configurations to experimental incursions, and from
language research to conceptual and ethical issues,
whose discussion is of particular relevance nowadays.

It is undeniable that a wider circulation of documentaries
worldwide has contributed to the maturity of
the genre, not only as a marketing product but also for
the widespread acceptance it has received from audiences,
who can now appreciate it better because they
know it better. On the other hand, the significant increase
in the number of documentaries has only been
possible with the advent of new technologies that
make their production more accessible and instant.

In this respect, It’s All True Festival, now in its 14thedition,
plays a fundamental role by screening the
cream of documentary film productions from the
four corners of the planet, while also fostering a debate
around this type of production in the Festival’s
			discussion forums.

SESC - São Paulo has staunchly supported It’s All True
as a co-organizer since its first edition, as it believes
in the importance of creating opportunities to disseminate
this film genre which, in spite of its many
qualities, still finds considerable resistance from major
			movie exhibitors.

In a world saturated with images and information –
but also devoid of in-depth knowledge and reflection
that give it greater consistency and cohesion – a
film festival like It’s All True evokes new understandings
of contemporary complexities and the rapid
			transformation of our times.
