The kingdom of Swaziland is the last monarchy in Africa. A land of startling contrasts, it combines the opulence of king Mswati and his wives with alarming poverty rates. More than half of Swaziland's population of one million people live on incomes of less than one dollar a day. 42% of its inhabitants are HIV+, the highest infection rate worldwide. The king banished political parties in 1970, and now personally appoints his prime minister, cabinet ministers and one third of the country's Parliament. In spite of this, there have been incipient signs of a popular revolt against Mswati's regime to change the situation before the country disappears.
