A bonafide member of a select club of astronauts, the Russian Valery Polyakov holds the record for the length of time any human has been in space, 437 days in a row on Mir, the giant space station, between 1994 and 1995. He survived orphanhood during WW2 and became a physician and a scientist. Polyakov donated his own blood and marrow for experiments on spaceflights only to prove that man can fly to Mars. Speaking for the first time about his experiences, Polyakov does not avoid controversial issues such as his involvement with the KGB, the secret police of the Soviet era, and his isolation upon his return to Earth.
