The investigation carried out by the Australian journalist, John Pilger, in East Timor did not only expose a hitherto unknown massacre perpetrated against the country's civilian population in 1991. His research allowed to prove the criminal support given by some Western countries, like the US, UK and Australia, of East Timor's illegal invasion by Indonesia in 1975, which led to unprecedented arbitrariness and a brutal genocide in that country for more than 20 years. Pilger's denunciation helped spur East Timor's movement for independence in 1999.
