Shah Reza Pahlevi's pro-Western dictatorship was overthrown in 1979, when a popular uprising led by Ayatollah Khomeini - until then exiled in Paris - broke out. Under Khomeini's rule, Iran turned into an Islamic theocracy marked by a series of political crises, such as the seizure of the US embassy at Teheran, where 53 Americans were held hostage for 444 days, and the Iran-Iraq war, which lasted eight years. Filmed in the heat of the moment with many crowd shots, this documentary is broadcast yearly on Iranian TV in a bid to reaffirm the doctrine that triumphed in 1979.
