The slaughter of 12 students and one teacher at Columbine High School in Colorado by two teenage gunmen in 1999 was the starting point for activist filmmaker Michael Moore to explore the roots of violence in the USA. In doing so, he learns that the easy availability of guns, in a nation with widespread gun ownership where even kids learn how to shoot, combined with what he calls America's culture of fear, is in part what fuels the alarming rate of tens of thousands of deaths every year caused by guns. The controversy sparked by the film led US retailer Kmart to stop over-the-counter sales of certain kind of ammunition.
