For more than 20 years, from 1932, the Japanese chemical company Chisso Corporation dumped large amounts of mercury into Japan's Minamata Bay. Mercury-contaminated fish and shellfish were eaten by the local population causing diseases and congenital deformities. As of 1956, the victims and their families organized themselves and took the company to court. The lawsuit went on for four years and Chisso was found guilty of poisoning the bay. These citizens' struggle against the company forced it to make radical changes to its operating methods.
