Marcel Ophüls devastating chronicle about the four years of German occupation in France during WW2 is a straightforward account of the enthusiastic collaboration of the Vichy regime with the Nazis under the connivance of the French economic elite. With a run time of more than four hours, the film proves that the underground resistance against German invaders was an exception and by no means a rule and demolishes the widespread belief held by the French people. Not even the famous chansonnier Maurice Chevalier escapes the overwhelming eloquence of these images.
