The traditional rivalry between River Plate and Boca Juniors, two of Argentina's major soccer teams, never saw a more tragic day than June 23, 1968. Following a trouble-free match between the two teams at Monumental de Nuñez Stadium, River Plate's home ground, a tumult that has never been clarified took place at Door 12, one of the stadium's exits, culminating in the death of 71 fans and more than 100 people injured. Forty years on, the causes of the tragedy are still unclear. There are reports that the local authorities failed to open the door as the crowd tried to find its way out. There is even a political hypothesis - witnesses affirm that Boca's fans were shouting Peronist slogans at the height of the military dictatorship ruled by general Ongania.
