The life and times of Genivaldo da Silva, a small farmer from Inhapi in the semi-desertic area of Alagoas State, Northeastern Brazil. A former member of Brazil's Landless Peasant Movement (MST), Genivaldo quit the movement after disagreeing with its struggle methods, which included a training period with the Peruvian guerilla group Sendero Luminoso. After that, Genivaldo was involved in the Pastoral Land Commission, coordinated by the Catholic Church. He went on to join the left-wing Workers Party (PT), from where he was expelled. Now in his maturity, Genivaldo looks back on his past activist experiences that led him to sacrifice his family life and caused so much distress among his children. He continues to seek an independent path to the social organization of agricultural communities, some of which he helped to build.
