The Mantaro Valley in Peru's central Andean range, more than 3,000 meters above sea level, is a land of musicians. Despite the difficulties of daily life in this region, parties are held every day organized by local players dressed up smartly and respectably. From the 1950's on, an unusual bridge was built between the Mantaro Valley and New York, leading the Peruvian musicians to replace their violins and harps with the sax. Since then, the instrument invented in 1844 by the Belgian Adolphe Sax and immortalized by Charlie Parker and Dexter Gordon has taken a highly creative rereading by the sax orchestras of Central Peru, which display their Inca accent tunes with peculiar sonorities.
