Despite its international fame, the Christ the Redeemer statue atop Corcovado Mountain in Rio, recently heralded as one of the new seven wonders of the world, has a story behind it that few people know about. Many are unaware of the fact that its designer and builder was a Brazilian engineer, Heitor da Silva Costa (1873-1947), who won a designing contest to build the statue.
