The motives behind the US impasse in Iraq are examined in depth in this début film, which was nominated for this year's Oscar as best documentary. Directed by Charles Ferguson and with numerous first-hand accounts from American authorities who were at the frontline of decisions in Iraq, such as ambassador Barbara Bodine and the former Deputy Secretary of State, Richard Armitage, as well as US servicemen and Iraqi civilians, the film takes a detailed look at the successive blunders of the US policy in the region. Insufficient troop levels, allowing the looting of Baghdad, purging professionals from the Iraqi government, and the disbanding of the Iraqi military largely created the chaos that engulfs Iraq today, turning the US into hostages of a nightmare.
