The legacy of Brazilian journalist and writer Antonio Callado (1917-1997) is remembered by his peers and contemporaries, such as Carlos Heitor Cony, Moacyr Werneck de Castro, Frei Betto, Ferreira Gullar, Ana Arruda Callado, and actress Fernanda Montenegro, among others. Callado worked as a correspondent in Europe for the BBC and Radio Diffusion Française during WW2. Soon after the war, he returned to Brazil eager to discover his own country. He dissected various elements of the Brazilian reality through a dense and highly original journalistic and literary work. In his oeuvre, Callado would always struggle for a more just, pluralistic, democratic and freer country, which caused him to be arrested during the Brazilian military dictatorship.
