During the 1960's, Brazilian filmmaker Mario Civelli visited several places across Brazil in an attempt to capture the transition of the country to modernity and its progress marked by profound social and regional disparities. The film shows footage of the city of São Paulo in its first strides towards becoming a metropolis in the 1920's, the boldness of Brasília's architecture and the poverty of the workmen who built it in the 1950's, the construction of Madeira-Mamoré highway through the Amazon rainforest , and the discovery of oil on the Bahia State coast in 1939. All these events form the portrait of a country of a plural multifaceted identity. The critical tone of this documentary caused it to be banned in 1968. It didn´t get a commercial release until 1970 though in limited circulation ever since.
