An investigation into the origin of the São Bernardo do Campo workers union movement in Brazil between 1978 and 1981, when several steel workers' strikes were organized in the region's industrial plants in defiance of political repression during the Brazilian military dictatorship. The city of São Bernardo is captured in the heat of the workers' struggle against suppression of their rights as they gathered at Vila Euclides Stadium to decide on their course of action. The 1979 and 1980 strikes led to government intervention in the Steel Workers' Union and to the arrest of the movement leaders, like the now Brazilian president Luís Inácio da Silva.
