Coming from the rural hinterlands of Northeastern Brazil, singer and composer Waldick Soriano had to face all kinds of hardships before he reached stardom. He worked as a ploughman, miner and shoeshine boy and only had primary education. His musical talent was revealed when he moved to São Paulo and recorded his first album. He soon became a popular idol, and during the 60's and 70's his romantic tunes would always hit the charts. Although Waldick is much loved by popular audiences in Brazil, he is still regarded by the country's intellectual elite as being tacky and kitschy. With more than 700 songs to his credit, Waldick's music is often juxtaposed with mementos from his own life. In spite of his fame, his personal story is one of unrequited loves, the separation from his son and loneliness.
