Portraying reality, exposing injustice and contributing to the understanding of History are some of the possible avenues open to documentaries. Given their unrelenting quest to fathom a world of growing complexity, the demand for non-fiction films has been on the rise while their presence in the worldwide market is increasingly felt.

In Brazil, since the 1990’s documentaries have incorporated the influence of masters such as Grierson and Vertov, thereby achieving creative and intellectual autonomy. It’s All True – International Documentary Film Festival is one of the most important events celebrating this film genre in Latin America and a leader in the promotion of Brazilian and international documentaries.

This year, the Festival brings a Retrospective of Brazilian Experimental Documentary, a special program comprising only domestic films which revolutionized the country’s documentary aesthetics. Additionally, the International Retrospective featuring “Ten Documentaries that Changed the World” will focus on films whose repercussions have extended far beyond screening rooms to reach the immediate and future realities of their respective countries. The artistic legacy of two important international film directors, Ingmar Bergman and Michelangelo Antonioni, both deceased in 2007, will also be shown in retrospective.

Banco do Brasil once again sponsors It´s All True, which in its 13th edition will display a wideranging panorama of the best of 2007 and 2008 documentary productions. By exhibiting select features from the Festival’s program in the cities of São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Brasilia, Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil provides audiences with a rare opportunity to keep abreast of the novelties in the world of documentaries, while contributing to the debate among organizers, producers and specialists thereby consolidating Brazil as an important discussion forum for this film genre.
