The Brazilian film distributor RIOFILME was
established in 1992 under unusual emergency
circumstances as a part of Rio de Janeiro City
Council, and has ever since played a fundamental
role in the revival of Brazilian cinema production.
In its first years, it stood out as the only film
distributor in Brazil geared to the country’s
motion picture industry.
In line with the development of Brazilian
cinema of recent years, now well on its way to
industrialization through incentives that foster,
among other initiatives, the private sector interest
in the distribution of films for the domestic
market, RIO FIL ME – still the distributor in Brazil
with the largest yearly average of Brazilian films
released – has focused on productions which,
despite their high artistic and cultural value, are
faced with the growing problem of how to reach
cinema screens nationwide.
Within this context, RIOFILME has demonstrated
a strong affinity with Brazilian documentary
filmmaking. This can be ascribed to the fact that, in
the past three years, half of the films distributed
by RIO FIL ME have been in the documentary
genre, and better still, documentaries now
represent its best box office results.
Therefore, it is only natural that RIOFILME should
go hand in hand with initiatives that promote
documentary cinema, as it has in the past few
years with the It’s All True – International
Documentary Film Festival, which in 2008
reaches its 13th edition as an international event
of great credibility and prestige.
