Documentarians seek to show the truth –
without actors. They know not when the film
begins nor when it ends. They go out into the
streets in search of truth. And they wind up with
a documentary which, in reality, is a work of
fiction for it gives us the world as seen through
the eyes of the filmmaker.
Fictionists start out from the other end of the
spectrum. They try to depart from a tedious,
boring, frustrating reality. They create non-facts,
write a text, rehearse actors and in the end tell
us a story, which though fictional, purports to
depict real events.
Artists and scientists lie somewhere in between
these two extremes – escaping reality through
free thinking or getting tied up in reality by
telling the truth. Neither attempt is successful.
While a fictionist escapes reality, documentarians
cannot free themselves from their own eyes, their
storyline and their unique view of the world.
This is the 13th It’s All True – International
Documentary Film Festival featuring
several Brazilian produced documentaries. This
filmmaking style has been increasingly favored
by Brazilian artists who seek to exhibit what
they believe is real in their country, uncovering
its shortcomings and qualities, its potentials
and hurdles in myriad ways. The result is a
mosaic of visions and an imaginary showcase
of how Brazil is really perceived in the minds of
Brazilian artists and audiences. It’s all true - and
this is no lie. This is a festival of real-life films
with plenty of imagination. A festival which the
São Paulo State Government is always keen to
sponsor, showcase and promote, and audiences
experience the wealth of talent and imagination
of Brazilian documentarians.
