In Quartel do Indaiá, in the state of Minas Gerais, it is hard to separate fact from fiction, true stories from fabrications. An old mining community, left over from a quilombo (a settlement founded by African descendants), is far from urban life, schools, and conventional medicine. Here there is an oral tradition that mixes African references and generates its own wisdom, where there are no boundaries between life and death. Pedro de Alexina (82 years old) invokes this ancestral memory, to which funeral songs in the Banguela dialect (that practically only he still knows) belong, in order to prepare the soul of his friend João Batista, who has just died at 120 years old. You can never be too cautious in this territory, where God and the Devil co-exist in broad daylight.
