In Brazil there are around 500 professional football clubs; 40 teams compete in the two major national leagues and only 8% are part of the so-called football "elite." The huge majority of players therefore live on precarious work conditions without contracts or official work, receiving pay late, without vacation or any benefits. In this world of small clubs, far from millionaire sponsors and technical and medical infrastructure, athletes like Maninho (32 years old) who was a champion of the Guarani Club, still dream of some kind of security. Ex-players like Wlade, a former member of Vila Nova Club, now work as a security guard. Very few, like Marquinhos Carioca, survive as coaches after retiring.
