Digging through the archives of PIDE, the secret police of the Salazar dictatorship in Portugal, the director collects 16 pictures of political prisoners and tries to decipher their story. Working against time in order to find survivors, she starts to find explanations in reports. Memories then emerge of conflicting emotions that dominated the prisoners at the moment of pictures - which is not rare, but one of the rare occasions in which a few tried to confront (even if it was just with a look) their captors and executioners. A woman recalls her unexplainable reaction of smiling in front of the camera - behavior that has haunted her for her whole life. Through this unusual angle, the film encounters traces for a portrait of 48 years of dictatorship in Portugal.
