The persecution of independent artists during the Soviet regime inspired a young man, Igor Savitsky, in a journey that is as fascinating as it is risky. Convincing the authorities that he is an art trader, he gets government funding and sets up a museum in the middle of the Uzbekistani desert, uniting 40,000 works from forbidden artists far from the KGB's reach. In addition to work from the Russian vanguard, he discovers an unknown school of artists based in Uzbekistan after the 1917 Revolution, who developed an original fusion between European modernism and secular Islamic tradition. But the fate of one of the largest collections of 20th Century Russian art, disputed by Islamic fundamentalists, corrupt bureaucrats, and dealers, remains uncertain as always.
