A city of about a million people has risen around the El Arafa cemetery in Cairo. In close and unusual co-existence, markets, houses, bakeries, schools, mechanics and other establishments have spread the hubbub of daily life throughout the tombs, a place known as "City of the Dead." Shepherds lead herds of sheep through the streets, often crossing paths with funeral processions, which are understandably common. A predominantly poor population continues its struggle for survival in a territory that was initially intended for eternal rest.
