With a 40-year career and a large part of his work dedicated to examining institutions, filmmaker Frederick Wiseman turns his looks to the Paris Opera Ballet, one of the greatest dance companies in the world. Roaming with his camera through the hallways and rehearsal rooms of the Palais Garnier (the ballet's headquarters, built in the 19th Century), Wiseman exposes details of the dancers' physical effort for mastery of choreography, shown later on stage of the beautiful 2,200-seat theater - in which the ceiling was painted by Marc Chagall. Fragments of performances are also shown, like "The House of Bernarda Alba" and "Orpheus and Eurydice", all of them eloquent testimonies of the rigor and technical perfection that are the trademark of the French ballet.
