One of RioFilme’s attributions is to contribute to relevant festivals
and markets in Rio for the audiovisual industry and the city’s
population. It is an honor for the company, therefore, to support
this new edition of the most important documentary festival in
Latin America. This is truly an organic and long-term partnership.
Through its history, RioFilme has invested in dozens of documentaries.
In 2009, the film “Simonal,” distributed by RioFilme
and MovieMobz, was a huge success with critics and audiences.
Recently, the company joined the Secretaria do Audiovisual do
MinC and TV Brasil in the Long DOC program, which enables the
production and release of five documentaries.
RioFilme’s mission is to promote the development of Rio’s
audiovisual industry, considering the several links in its production
chain and their economic and cultural impacts on
the city. The city invests in the production and distribution of
films, TV series, and content for new media, in addition to inclusive
events and projects. In 2009, RioFilme invested almost
R$10 million in the development, production, and release of
several features made by Rio companies; in supporting strategic
events like the Festival do Rio; and actions to stimulate the
market and democratize access, like the project “Cinema na
Praça.” This investment was ten times larger than in 2008.
The seven films released in 2009 by RioFilme in partnership
with Downtown Filmes, Europa Filmes, and MovieMobz were
seen by more than 2.2 million people, or 100 times more than
the company’s releases in 2008. By the end of 2012, RioFilme
plans to invest close to R$90 million in the Rio audiovisual industry.
This will be the largest volume of resources dedicated
to the sector by local public initiatives. The planned amount
is equivalent to almost four times the investments between
2004 and 2008. This record investment will be possible due to
annual contributions from the city government to RioFilme, as
well as the company itself’s increasing revenue and the leverage
of third-party resources.
Actions undertaken by RioFilme are part of the “Programa Rio,
Capital do Audiovisual,” under “Plano Estratégico da prefeitura
do Rio de Janeiro / Rio Pós-2016”; and of “Programa Rio Audiovisual,”
formulated in partnership with the state government.
The central objective is to consolidate the city as a principal
center of creation, production, distribution, and exhibition of
audiovisual content from Brazil and Latin America. The revitalization
of RioFilme is a result of the city government’s commitment
to the growth of an economic and cultural activity
that is strategic for the city’s development, which has a large
impact on the generation of revenue, jobs, and quality of life.
This is an evident vocation for Rio, which can be, should be,
and is stimulated by the government.
