Close to the 10th Parallel North in western Acre on the border with Peru, the small FUNAI Xinane base is the headquarters of a pioneering, fundamental and risky work. In modest installations in the middle of the jungle, the frontiersman José Carlos Meirelles, aided by anthropologist Terri Aquino, carries out the difficult mission of protecting the isolated indigenous people of the region. With few resources beyond decades of experience in the indigenous cause, essential for elaborating a policy for the isolated that has become a reference worldwide, the specialists tirelessly perform their tasks - which include not only permanent negotiation with established riverside communities but facing traffickers and squatters who try to invade the area.
