Wroclaw, Poland, 1949. Werka, age 11, and Marcelo, age 9, are left at the door of an orphanage. They will spend the next years going from institution to institution, while their mother, Tonia, a communist since before the Second World War, will complete her sentence in prison, accused of collaborating with American spies. Many years later when they are adults, the siblings discover, through letters from their mother, tales of her torturers and records of her forced confessions, countless unknown details of a past that dramatically marked their lives.
