The Chilean history books do not show them, but many photos and documents prove the forced travel of the indigenous people of several nations in the 19th Century to be displayed in so-called “ethnographic exhibitions” in several locations in Europe. Captured with the complicity of Chilean authorities and European scientific societies, these indigenous people were shown to large crowds in parks and gardens, subjected to adverse sanitary and climatic conditions that cost several of them their lives. The location of some skeletons in the University of Zurich and the negotiation for their repatriation puts this indigenous exploitation into question, which generated large profits for European businessmen.
