Nothing escaped the venomous verve of Bahian cordelista Cuíca de Santo Amaro, Between 1930 and 1964, the controversial and irreverent scribe produced close to 100,000 flyers illustrated by Sinésio Alves, which dealt with everything from the cost of living and crimes that made headlines to leaders involved in the Second World War, like Hitler and Stalin. His stories, often obscene, sold like hot cakes at the markets of Salvador, where he was often found around the Mercado Modelo. Transformed into a character by writers Dias Gomes and Jorge Amado and by films by Roberto Pires and Anselmo Duarte, Cuíca left behind a controversial trail as author of blackmail and paid material, as well as a relapsed father.
