Son of European refugees Anna Illich and Paul Mautner, Jorge Mautner was born in Rio in 1941 into a mixture of influences, cultures, and religions. He was introduced to Candomblé while still a child by his first nanny, Lúcia. When his parents separate, his mother joins violinist Henri Müller, with whom Jorge learned to play the instrument. A precocious writer, he published his first book at age 21, also beginning his career in journalism. Imprisoned by the dictatorship in 1964, he escapes to Europe, meeting Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil in London, which marks a definitive approximation to the Tropicália nucleus. Returning to Brazil, Mautner continues his parallel trajectory in literature and writing songs like “Maracatu Atômico”, “Lágrimas Negras” and “Eu Não Peço Desculpas.”
