Led by Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil at the end of the ‘60s, the Tropicália movement reached its peak in the effervescent musical scene polarized by television festivals of the time, which revealed new talents that confronted cultural patterns as much as the repressive scene of a recently-installed military dictatorship. Mixing popular and regional Brazilian music with an international rock beat, Tropicália aligned itself with simultaneous manifestations in other arts, like Glauber Rocha’s Cinema Novo, the iconoclastic productions of Teatro Oficina and the parangolés of visual artist Hélio Oiticica. The movement’s short and intense history, suffocated by the imprisonment and exile of its principal stars, emerges from the images and testimonies registered here.
