Long time friend and admirer of British filmmaker and director of photography Richard Leacock (1921-2011), one of the pioneers of Direct Cinema, filmmaker Jane Weiner digs into rare archival images, alternating records of her encounters with the director and some of his friends. Introducing an informal atmosphere, she reconstructs Leacock’s rich life, starting with his birth in the Canary Islands, where he made his first short at only 14 years old. Sharing the intimacy of this generous and dedicated man, she gives voice to the cameraman of films like “Primary” (60) by Robert Drew and “Louisiana Story” (48) by Robert Flaherty, who guided his work by the incessant search for capturing “the feeling of being there.”
