Playwright, theater director and writer from São Paulo, Augusto Boal (1931-2009) became a recognized name on the world scene for developing the techniques that he named Teatro do Oprimido. Spreading through dozens of countries in the world starting in the ‘70s, this libertarian approach aims to break the viewer’s immobility, transforming him or her into an actor in the represented story. Its political aspect did not escape the military dictatorship, earning its creator imprisonment, torture and exile in 1971. Returning to Brazil in 1986, Boal retook the thread of his work, which was also famous for its constant evolution.
