Director of the M13 (a prison controlled by the Khmer Rouge in the 1970s) for four years, Kaing Guek Eav, better known as Duch, was transferred to the no less fearsome S21 center in Phnom Penh. As secretary of the party, he commanded a system of torture and systematic executions, which killed at least 12,280 people according to encountered files. The first member of the Khmer to be taken to international court, Duch became an essential figure for the stripping of the regime’s machine of death, which is estimated to have eliminated a quarter of the population of Cambodia between 1975 and 1979.
