Two prisoners of Polunsky Unit in Livingston, Texas are the characters of this documentary by the award-winning German director Werner Herzog. Both were condemned ten years ago for the same triple homicide. One of them has a life sentence. The other is eight days away from his execution. The documentary investigates their stories, while also hearing the testimonies of the victims’ relatives, the wife of one of the prisoners, and other characters from the prison - like the chaplain and an employee who suddenly has a crisis after being responsible for restraining the condemned of 125 executions. Behind it all, the reasons for killing and dying are debated.
