Verdict
Best Documentary in the Feature or Medium-Length Film International Competition
Planet of Snail
The jury is honored to have been able to see so many extraordinarily good feature documentaries. A good documentary opens worlds to which we ordinarily cannot go. A very good documentary does this through the creative and technically accomplished use of film arts.
Planet of Snail achieves both of these things by creating a special cinematic window into the world of a deaf mute man and the woman who finds a way to share a life with him. In doing so, the film reminds us to celebrate humanity and dignity that exist on both sides of the camera.
Best Documentary in the Short Film International Competition
Grandmothers
A student teaches us that issues aren't those that become dated. Those are the ways. This marvelous work is about a theme so many times taped, but that should never be forgotten: the missing of the South American's dictatorships, the kidnapping and immoral adoption of children of these who were missing. But the formidable creativity, the highly original use of animation and postproduction, the freshness of the narrative, and the respectful humor make Grandmothers the best short of this category.
Honorable Mentions
We Wanted to Blow Up the Vasa
The jury was delighted with the high caliber of short films in the competition. So many of them deserving recognition that we decided to award a Special Mention to We Wanted to Blow Up the Vasa – a filmic roller coaster, full of surprising twists and a range of media formats, a film which manages to question national myths with humor and charm.
