DESI

Maria Augusta Ramos

The Netherlands
90', COLOR, 35mm, 2000
Dutch speaking, english subtitles and portuguese electronic subtitles

Desi is an 11-year-old girl, like any other. She goes to school every day, listens to popular CDs, gossips with her girlfriends and fights with the boys during recess. She's a lot of fun, just like her friends. But when the bell sounds the end of the class and all of the other children go home to their parents, she sits down by the street in front of the school, takes out her cell phone and calls her father, who, as always, has forgotten to pick her up. Desi's mother committed suicide when she was just 18 months old. The film is a story of survival: of how a child adapts to its family and social environment. Director Maria Augusta Ramos is a Brazilian, living in Holland for over a decade.
