The Juan Fernandez Archipelago, which is a natural reserve of three islands located 700 km from the coast of Chile, was the setting for one of the most celebrated European novels - "Robinson Crusoe", by Daniel Defoe, based on the true story of Scottish sailor Alexander Selkirk, who was marooned there for several years. Today, the islands have around 600 inhabitants - among who are several children whose stories remind us of Selkirk's - after finishing primary school, they have to leave the islands where they learned how to live.

NUBA CONVERSATIONS
CONVERSAÇÕES COM OS NUBAS

Arthur Howes & Amy Hardie

United Kingdom
55', COLOR, VIDEO, 1999
English speaking

Ten years ago, Arthur Howes made a series of award winning films with a group of Nuba people from the mountain village of Torogi, in Sudan. He promised he would return to show these films to them. Because of the civil war and a denial of a visa, his return has been delayed until 1999. NUBA CONVERSATIONS is initially narrated by the filmmaker returning to Sudan to make contact with his Nuba friends. Through a series of clandestine encounters in Khartoum, the film commences to unravel a labyrinth of racial and religious persecution. From this point onwards, it is the Nuba in Khartoum, in the mountains an in exile who tell their own story.
