À L'ABRI DU TEMPS
THE SHELTERING TIME
AO ABRIGO DO TEMPO

Stéphane Drolet

Canada
79', COLOR, VIDEO, 2000
French speaking, English and Portuguese subtitles

What is time? It is a concept that defies definition. Though it can be measured. Three researchers at the National Research Council of Canada are trying to do just that, with incredible accuracy. The cesium fountain clock they are perfecting will one day oscillate nine billion times a second! Their obsession with ultra precise timekeeping is equaled only by the passion of a talented Quebec watchmaker by the name of Marc Ferland, a true artist who is overcome by emotion at the idea of one day realizing his dream of making a watch - for the pure beauty of it. He goes to Switzerland, home of precision timepieces, where a like-minded team of watchmakers warmly welcomes him. From Ottawa to the Vallé de Joux, we share the passion of these committed individuals who spare no time or effort in their pursuit of an ideal.

ÁCRATAS
ANARCHISTS
ANARQUISTAS

Virginia Martínez

Uruguay
73', COLOR, VIDEO, 1999
Spanish speaking, Portuguese subtitles

The so-called "expropriating anarchists" comprised a minority group among the numerous social, political, and union groups that came to South America in the wake of the European immigration, from the latter part of the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century. They lived an especially radical form of social demand: according to them, the power and violence of the State could only be faced by bullets, by the violence of the oppressed against the system. ÁCRATAS tells the story of this group and of Miguel Arcángel Roscigno, one of its main representatives.

World Premiére

A personal film-essay on television and memory. From history to autobiography and back. From the filmmaker´s first personal recollection of television to the earliest memories of television in Argentina. Two stories and two dreams intertwined: the story of Jaime Yankelevich, the Jewish immigrant who became the king of radio and introduced TV to Argentina, and the story of the filmmaker´s own grandfather, Torcuato Di Tella, another immigrant who created an industrial empire, now vanished like the industrial aspirations of Argentina. Through the story of these two families, we begin to understand the lost dream of a nation.

SOUTHERN COMFORT
CONFORTO SULISTA

Kate Davis

EUA/ USA
90', COLOR, 35mm, 2000
English speaking, Portuguese subtitles

Robert Eads, a pleasant and amiable cowboy from the countryside of Georgia, United States, is a real bloke and is proud of it; at least, that's how he comes across with his pipe in his hand and his full beard. He is so integrated to the community that the representatives of the local Ku Klux Klan have invited him to become a member. But in spite of his idyllic home in the midst of a hilly landscape dotted with hay bales, Robert is the victim of a hostile environment. When malignant tumors on Robert's ovaries are diagnosed, over 20 doctors refuse to treat his ovarian cancer - all of them fear losing their reputation in the repressive climate that is Robert's homeland.
This film follows Robert during the last year of his life, beginning in the springtime, when he meets Lola, with whom he soon forms a deep bond of love. During the summer, Robert receives his parent's final visit. Finally, Robert is able to fulfill his life's dream and take part in the Southern Comfort conference in Atlanta, the most important transgender forum in North America. Shortly afterwards, Robert dies, at the age of 52.

VACANCES AU PAYS
A TRIP TO THE COUNTRY
UMA VIAGEM AO CAMPO

Jean-Marie Teno

Cameroon-France-Germany
75', COLOR, 35mm, 2000
French speaking, Portuguese and English subtitles

A personal voyage in search of the "modern" Cameroon. With irony the film questions a model of development based on a particular concept of "modernity" summarized as followSOUND: everything from Europe is modern while all that is African is archaic and must be discarded. A flawed notion instilled by our so-called "Modern Education". Retracing travels of his youth, the filmmaker sets out from Yaounde, the capital, to Bandjoun, his village. Along the way, he meets ordinary people and listens to their hopes, disappointments and frustrations in the face of a changing society. "A Trip to the Country" is a personal reflection on the merits of this race towards "modernity" that seems to have become our unique model for development.
