International Conference on "Documentary Trends and Perspectives"
The International Conference on "Documentary Trends and Perspectives" brings together Brazilian and foreign researchers and producers who are connected with documentary movies, seeking to stimulate debate on how this format is headed. The initiative is the result of the "Iberian-American Sights" project, developed by FEISAL (Iberian-American Federation of Image and Sound Schools) for the purpose of improving documentary teaching and production in the regions’ cinema schools. The Conference is coordinated by Maria Dora Mourão, ECA-USP professor and president of FEISAL (Iberian American Federation of Image and Sound Schools) and FORCINE (Brazilian Forum of Cinema and Audiovisual Schools), and by Fernão Pessoa Ramos, researcher, Unicamp professor, and president of SOCINE (Brazilian Society of Cinema Studies).
THEMES
The documentary currently holds a central place in reflection about cinematic and audiovisual production. We do not intend to restrain ourselves in a narrow definition of "documentary cinema", strictly related to more traditional production types. A contemporary definition goes much further: from the group of images that invade our daily lives via the TV and Internet, to the avant-garde experiments which are open to "intertextuality" and personal, first person, movies. The organization of the panels seeks to establish a horizon that covers this broad range of audiovisual productions, also focusing on Brazilian and Latin American documentary, instruction on documentary, and the ethical issues.
Panel 1: "Frontiers and Different Traditions of Non-fictional Cinema" – a reflection on the limits of non-fictional cinema and the borderlines it shares with fiction.
Panel 2: "Documentary and Avant-Garde Cinema" – discussion of the relationship of avant-garde cinema with non-fictional cinema.
Panel 3: "Documentary Production: from film to digital" – the impact of new technologies on documentary production and the perspectives brought to bear by introducing new media.
Panel 4: "Brazil, Latin America and the Documentary" – a panorama of documentary cinema in Latin America, yesterday and today.
Panel 5: "Documentary Instruction and Production" – the relationships between teaching and producing documentaries in the universities and a discussion of the works coming out of the "Iberian-American Sights" project.
