"Little by little, Brazil is building its gay history, based on the courageous researchers who challenge our endemic disdain for memories. The redemption of a past that many insisted on erasing is what makes it possible for us to establish an community identity and, based on that, a visibility that ensures social advancement.
João Silvério Trevisan was the first, with "Libertines in Paradise", spanning 500 years of homosexuality in our country. Brazilianist and historian James Green decided to reconstruct the gay scene of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo over the last one hundred years, in his book "Beyond Carnaval: Male Homosexuality in Brazil in the 20th Century", released in 2000 and which also includes a video version of the facts and testimonies. "It's All True" presents the world premier of this work which is fundamental for understanding the current political moment of the Brazilian gay movement - where Green is an important agent, working on its creation and structure since the '70s.
The documentary "Beyond Carnaval" is the starting point for a debate on the new paths taken by militant homosexuals, at a time when gays and lesbians are gaining previously unheard of space in the media and on the streets and the civil rights struggle is beginning to result in laws and political support."
