New Trends In Documentary Films

GOETHE INSTITUTE AND IT´S ALL TRUE PRESENTS:

New Trends In Documentary Films

The observation-type documentaries, in the style of direct cinema - that renounce the contrivances of acting or author's comments, while seeking a more faithful image of the facts - have lost ground, since the '80s, to a variety of mixed forms of documentary production, works which consciously cross the lines between the different media e genres. The docu-dramas, the recreated scenes, and the self-reflective cinematographic essay are the first examples of this new trend, which unfolds into an ever more complex repertoire: semi-documentary formats that reconstruct happenings; Reality TV programs, guided by sensationalistic journalism; docu-soaps, acting out roles from daily life; and, finally, fake-docus, that, simulating the documentary nature, challenge and cast an ironic look at the genre's traditional strategies. In the area of entertainment television, the Internet era, with its webcams monitoring and exposing the daily life of common citizens to millions of people, has inspired the rise of the Big Brother Shows, which recycle the terrible scenario of George Orwell's novel, "1984".

Based on examples of contemporary Germanic documentaries, the program "New Trends in Documentary Films" brings an inventory of the genre's current possibilities. The presentation "Hybrid forms of the international documentary film", by German Peter Zimmermann, rounds out a program of eight films in the program. Zimmermann is the scientific director of Haus des Documentarfilms (Documentary House), in Stuttgart, Germany. A scholar who has been at such universities as Wuppertal and Marburgo (Germany) and Cairo, Egypt, he has published several works about the history of the esthetics of the genre, and is also co-editor of the series "Close Up", dedicated to the documentary movement in cinema and on TV.
